Working in PR isn’t just about writing press releases, posting on social media or talking to the media.
This September I was given the opportunity to fully understand the industry our clients work in whilst doing something I love.
At Changeworks Communications helping our clients plan and manage exhibitions is a significant part of the services we provide.
I recently took part in IMHX – the UK’s essential intralogistics event. This September over 20,000 supply chain professionals gathered to evaluate cutting edge technologies, explored the latest industry solutions and discussed how to increase efficiencies within supply chain operations.
Before I joined Changeworks I worked in a small cafe – I never would have thought this role would have a big impact on my PR career – with hospitality experience I was asked to work as a barista for our client, Hoppecke Industrial Batteries. My time at IMHX was one of my greatest experiences as I met new people and companies and gained an understanding into the logistics industry.
Below are my reasons why you should work at or attend a trade show to further your PR career:
Network! Network! Network! – There were thousands of exhibitors wanting to connect with like-minded people and were willing to talk for free. Many of the visitors I spoke with wanted to learn more about Changeworks and the services we provide; they were eager to share their experiences and listen to mine. Not only did I meet some interesting individuals but they were also more than happy to swap business cards!
Real-time marketing – Many companies schedule their social media content weeks before it gets posted – yes we even do this ourselves. But during an event who knows what will crop up. You want to engage in Twitter conversations, connect with businesses and find out what your competitors are involved in. While I was focused on serving food and drink, I made sure to keep my working head on and take photos and videos of the stand, visitors, employees, products and event the press – this gained a lot of coverage over all social media channels.
Give-aways – Conference attendees typically walk to aisles and fill their bags with freebies. Hoppecke made sure they stood out and attracted visitors to their stand – this definitely got people talking. By giving away free teddy bears, air fresheners, pens and sweets they sure succeeded and gained a lot of new leads.
With the correct preparation before, during and after the show, exhibitors have provided me with the knowledge and skills to build brand awareness and generate leads for the company I work for. Attending IMHX gave me the chance to build my personal network which will take me further up the career ladder.
