When applying for a new job, do you ever take into consideration the size of the business? It’s always important to do your research when looking into a new career. Investigate the company you are applying for and the way they work. When I was applying for an apprenticeship I wanted to start off in a small organisation.
From my own personal experience, below are my reasons why you should start your PR career in a smaller company.
Don’t think about a role in a big company, I’m thinking smaller. I have always wanted to work for a larger association, but starting small is where you want to start. You aren’t guaranteed to be working with the ‘high up’ bosses in a large company; in a small agency you pretty much get to do everything.
At Changeworks we work as part of a team, you learn on the go and communicate constantly. It may not sound easy, but it is definitely rewarding, especially with a qualification at the end of it.
One of the main advantages is that you are close with the senior employees and get to see first-hand how things are done. A small company or agency gives you more than your business cards; it gives you client experience, how to deal with more than one project at a time and how to help the team.
Learning – If you start learning within a smaller organisation you will be taught many skills such as, building relationships with the media, and being involved in more in depth client work. You get to show off your skills and have an input in the daily work.
Teamwork – You get to work in a team where you can learn from each other and most importantly you can help on another. Learning to work as part of a team is a valuable skill you can take into the future. Although we are comparatively small agency we operate at a higher level with some very well respected clients.
Diverse work – Being given the chance to work with different industries helps you to develop many skills to help you climb to PR ladder. Having skills in different industry sectors can help you boost your career even further.
Remember, have fun – You are allowed to have fun at work! Being part of Changeworks is like having a second family who I definitely learn from.
I’m not saying don’t work for a large organisation, as some of you may prefer it. But for now my motto is to think big by thinking small. Changeworks is the perfect company for me to grow relationships, be involved in client work and to develop new skills for the future.
